Kizomba, Urban Kiz, Semba & Tarraxinha

Understand the differences between Kizomba, Urban Kiz, Semba and Tarraxinha, their roots and what to look for when choosing festival workshops.

What is Kizomba?

Kizomba is both a music genre and a partner dance rooted in Angola. The dance grew from Semba; its music developed with influences including Caribbean Zouk. Connection, weight transfer and listening to the music are central to the dance.

What is Semba?

Semba is an Angolan music and dance tradition that predates Kizomba. It has its own character and cultural history. Learning about Semba helps put Kizomba in context, rather than treating the two names as interchangeable.

What is Urban Kiz?

Urban Kiz developed in Europe, particularly the Paris dance scene in the 2010s. It draws on Kizomba partnerwork but has a distinct approach, often using more open connection, linear movements, changes of speed and musical accents. The name became established around 2015.

Kizomba and Urban Kiz are related, but the terms describe different dance styles. Check the class title and teacher’s approach when choosing workshops.

What is Tarraxinha?

Tarraxinha is associated with Angolan dance and music. In dance, the focus is on small, controlled body movements and rhythmic connection, often with little travelling. Close partnerwork should always be comfortable for both dancers.

Tarraxinha and Tarraxo are not interchangeable labels. Ask the instructor what a class covers if the name is unfamiliar.

Choosing workshops at a festival

Start with the dance style and level you want to work on. Then look at whether a class focuses on foundations, partnerwork or musical interpretation. Learning several styles can be rewarding, but understanding their differences matters.

At Dubai Kizomba Fusion, the Full Pass includes workshops and parties. Private classes are booked separately. See the private-class directory and 2027 programme for the published information; this guide does not imply that every style has a scheduled workshop.
